On May 4th, 10 women from the non-profit organization “Las Comadres” met at the East Harlem Café located at 153 East 104th Street near the corner of Lexington Avenue in the community of East Harlem.
The local “Comadres” participated in the Quilts for Kids program which delivers hand-made quilts to children in hospitals around the country. The Comadres brought in their quilts to share with the group, while others learned about the process of getting involved with the Downy Touch of Comfort program and vowed to make a quilt themselves. Peggy Moss is a children’s book author who gives workshops on bullying and teasing to parents, teachers and kids. Her new book, “One of Us” will be launched at Book Culture New York City on May 24.
My sister and her husband recently renovated their house. They didn’t add a new bathroom or bedroom or even update the kitchen – moves that might have increased the value of their rambling home when they chose to sell it. Instead, they added space for both a pool table and a ping pong table on the ground floor.
From a realtor’s point of view, their addition was at best bizarre and quite possibly insane. From a parental perspective, it was ingenious. My hard-working sister created a space her teenage children love, a place their friends want to visit. By creating this space, she has insured that her children will be around more. She’ll know what they are up to, and get to know their friends. She’ll keep them off the roads, and feel better connected to their daily lives. We have other friends have created fabulous basement play rooms and teen spaces to achieve the same effect. The saying goes, “you can’t put a price on that kind of family time…” Read more »

Taureau – East Village
Lara also is founder and editor of Grits in the City
I’ve already disclosed that East 7th Street between Avenue A and 1st Avenue is my favorite culinary stroll in the city. When I heard a new restaurant, Taureau, had been added into the mix, I couldn’t wait to try it out. Located only a mere few steps east from a fellow fondue establishment, the Bourgeois Pig, I was curious to see how this restaurant would differ. First of all, I learned that Taureau actually means “beef” in French, so clearly the beef fondue must be amazing. I was unfortunately there with my sister who doesn’t eat red meat, so I’ll have to save that for a subsequent visit. However, I can attest that the scent aggresively permeating the sidewalk in front of the restaurant’s doorway would indicate it can’t be anything but amazing. Read more »

I needed to take a small break from my pursuit of the Latin Lover because there was a new character entering the potential bedroom scenario and he goes by the name Dr. TwitterCrush. When I first came across him, he was everything I ever wanted in a male companion, smart, slightly geeky, muscular, a little older which means a little wiser and more worldly. As the name implies, yes we initially met on Twitter (and I swear I didn’t create my account to meet men). So when I first discovered him, we didn’t really tweet each other, I simply followed him because I thought he was cute. Then one night I responded to him and we began talking . I told him I had a twitter crush on him and surprisingly, he told him the feeling was mutual!
This was truly a match made in heaven – one would think.
Sadly though it would never work out.

This article is from David Tacheny, founder of Performance Athletics, which is located on the Upper West Side.
There’s more health-related controversy bubblin’ up, folks, as New York (state and city) continues to push the issue of taxing sugary drinks like soda, flavored waters, and iced teas. There are two basic arguments at logger heads here.
For it: NYC Mayor Bloomberg and NY Governor David Paterson, along with nutritionists, dietitians and anybody who’s ever looked at what high fructose corn syrup actually does to the body, are for the penny-per-fluid once tax (20 oz coke will cost 20 cents more), because it will hopefully steer people toward more healthy choices, while helping to raise some serious cash to pay down the NY state debt. They’re also pushing the idea we’ll save millions in future health care costs by “helping” people make healthier choices. Read more »

Apparently a new breed of trophy wives has risen through the ranks. When I think of a trophy wife, I think, blond, w.a.s.p-y, smoking hot, in Lilly Pulitzer and pearl clad. However, in a recent Marie Claire article, it seems that Asian women are becoming the new trophy wives—they call it the “Woody Allen Effect.” I personally think it all started with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

I think this is the longest I’ve been silent on here in a while! I’ve got so much content to post and not enough time to get it all down. I just got back last Tuesday from a week in Costa Rica, so there’s some to share on that as well. First and most importantly though, I wanted to share a little information on a charity event I’m baking for tomorrow to benefit Autism Speaks. It’s called 140Sweets (formerly Cupcakes4Charity if you attended last year’s event). Last year’s event supported the American Cancer Society raising $1,100. It’s an organization founded by three of my good friends – Anna O’Brien, Joey Pasion, and Sarah Wingert.
This year’s event will be at Connolly’s Pub (121 West 45th Street – 3rd Floor, between 6th Avenue and Broadway) from 6-10 pm. No charge for entrance, just for the delicious baked goods donated by various bakers in the city. Rumored cupcake contributions include maple bacon, s’mores, cinnamon cream cheese, and PB&J (yours truly). There will also be drink specials, great music, and what promises to be a fun crowd. If you’re in the area, hope you’ll stop by at least for a bit to support this great cause and to say hello! Information on the event and for RSVPs, please visit http://140sweets.eventbrite.com/.
A little teaser of some of what’s in progress for you to enjoy…
PB&J Cupcakes – Next up, a grape jelly injection!
If you are not in NYC but would still like to support the cause, please visit http://givenow.autismspeaks.org/140sweets. Thanks in advance for your generousity.

Spring tennis season is in full swing at ElfTennis. Sign ups are at an all time high, children are swinging their racquets at full force, and everyone is grinning from ear to ear. Today, I had class on the Upper East Side, and the students were working on improving their backhands. I demonstrated the proper swing and swung the racquet with them; we worked on using the strength of both hands and on keeping the racquet parallel to the ground. I’ve been trying to offer incentives to coax the children into working on their backhands — incentives such as allowing them to play tennis baseball if they agree to refine their backhands. This tactic feels better than offering them candy, which simply contributes to our country’s obesity epidemic. I’m also working on molding the kids into cooperative learners rather than intense competitors.
I’m planning a festivity for this Month. Believe it or not, May is National Tennis Month. The Festivity will feature free clinics, music, giveaways, and a big meet-and-greet.
