Ft. Tryon Park
This article is from David Tacheny, founder of Performance Athletics, which is located on the Upper West Side.
When I began riding and racing bicycles I quickly discovered that, being a skinny little thing, I was going to have to learn to accelerate going up hills and find shelter in the slipstreams of my larger cohorts on the windswept flats of southern Minnesota.
These days, as people find their wallets lean and time precious, discovering new ways to engage with your immediate surroundings is not only a great way to rediscover your own neighborhood, but it can present some great new prospects for exercise activities. Read more »

High Line
The weather has been dreadful the last week but the weather report assures us that this weekend will bring us sunshine and warmth. Think 76 degrees on Sunday! In the meantime, here are some great events to check out in preparation for a sun-drenched weekend filled with picnics and outdoor drinking.
If you are suffering temporary seasonal depression like myself, maybe some comedy could brighten up your day. On Wednesday at 7pm, UCB Theatre, is hosting the coffee table book release of “Look at This F*cking Hipster.” The event will feature comedians such as Wyatt Cenac of The Daily Show, Reggie Watts, and more.
If you have to be indoors, you might as well be in a rock climbing gym and Urban Escapes, an event group in the city is putting together Boulder, Burger & Brews this Thursday, April 1st. You can rock climb at the Manhattan Plaza Health Club under the supervision of certified instructors then chill out with some beer and burger after your workout. For $59, it’s a pretty reasonable deal for climbing, an hour long lesson, and dinner.
Last but not least, go enjoy the outdoors and some art at the High Line in Chelsea. Brooklyn-based artist Spencer Finch’s project, The River That Flows Both Way’s is up for display. If you haven’t checked out the High Line yet, you really should. This retro New York City park, built upon on a section of the former elevated freight railroad on the West Side is a great place to people watch and lounge on a lazy Saturday.

In The Waste Land, T.S. Eliot wrote, “April is the cruelest month…” but now, perhaps April is not so bad: The Academy of American Poets named April National Poetry Month, and since 1996 have celebrated the month with Poetry 101 instruction for beginners, A Poem-a-Day distribution, and their Free Verse Photo Project (”a picture’s worth a thousand words…” - you know the rest…).
You can think of March 30th as the Fat Tuesday of this month for words. Come Tuesday, you’ll want to overdose on haikus and couplets and come crawling back for more til May! First stop: the Bluestockings Bookstore.
Local poets Renee Michelle Breedon and Monica Hand are the night’s features, but for others who are up to the challenge, bring eight minutes of poetry, prose, songs, or spoken word to spit-n-share. The jam is hosted by acclaimed poet Vittoria Repetto, who is described as “the hardest working guinea butch dyke poet on the Lower East Side.” It doesn’t get any better than that.
Women’s/Trans’ Poetry Jam & Open Mic at the Bluestocking Bookstore and Cafe ( 172 Allen Street), Tuesday, Mar. 30th at 7 p.m. – $5 suggested donation.
