Theatre Buzz: “This Isn’t Paradise” … Not Even Close

This Isn’t Paradise is so much like Glengarry Glen Ross that it could have been written by David Mamet himself.  That is … if David Mamet had fallen down a well and lost his memory.  And his ability to write a play. And when he crawled out of the well all he found in his pocket was a wad of cocktail napkins with scribbles on them which said Follow up on that real estate storyDon’t forget all that trademark cursingand the trademark misogyny.  Then Mamet took all the cocktail napkins and gave them to the guy who wrote Gigli and said Here, finish this up for me.

City Cinemania: BAMCinemaFest

bam1

Last week BAM’s Cinematek launched its inaugural BAMCinemaFest with the New York Premiere of Don’t Let Me Drown and a kick off after-party at Williamsburg’s Brooklyn Brewery. The breakout film was chosen as it was still coming off the height of its success from Sundance this January. Most of the other films in the line-up were chosen due to their subject matter hitting close to home, literally, as a good deal of the selected films are set within the five boroughs. Read more »

Gay Life – The Paulinator: Live Out Proud!

Dance on the Pier @ Pier 54

Dance on the Pier @ Pier 54

Dictionary.com‘s fourth definition of “Pride” states:  pleasure or satisfaction taken in something done by or belonging to oneself or believed to reflect credit upon oneself. That is precisely how I feel. After the horrific text message incident to my mom, I realized I’m finally comfortable enough with myself to admit openly and proudly that I am a gay man. This has been such an incredible journey and I am so thankful that I reached this part of my life when Marriage Equality is such a hot topic as well as during the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. As per usual, anytime something this momentous happens in my life, I like to celebrate and go all out! Well, I didn’t have to look very far because this month is simply jammed packed with events of all shapes and sizes!

A Little Bee Told Me … To Head For Central Park

Beach Party in Central Park!

Beach Party in Central Park!

Life’s A Beach or so I’ve been told for the last 20 years.  This weekend, Central Park tests that theory by turning part of itself into a Tel Aviv Beach Party.  Why?  Becuase Tel Aviv turns 100, and by my book that’s reason enough.  Here’s the what, when, where … and whoo-hoo.
Sunday June 21, 11am-6pm, rain or shine
Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park
11:00 AM: Visitors will be able to play classic Tel Aviv beach games Matkot ( paddle ball) and Shesh-Besh (Backgammon)
12:00 PM: DJ Hadar Marks kickes off the beach party.
1:00 PM: Live concert featuring Israel’s leading Reggae band, Hatikva 6.
3:00 PM: Israeli rock band Flow will play their biggest hits.
ALSO –  get information about Tel Aviv’s hotspots, tourism attractions and vibrant night life. El Al, the leading carrier to Israel, will be offering special deals for reservations made at this event.

Bee Spiritual: What Does Spirituality Even Look Like Anymore?

What does intelligent, new, cutting-edge, exciting and vibrant spirituality look like … let alone in New York City?

It’ll look like it always does; a group of humble revolutionaries, shaking up culture and pointing us towards a much brighter, usually hard to swallow at first (after all we do seem to keep murdering our great spiritual leaders) yet awe inspiring future.

I am pleased to post some NY based groups comprised of individuals who I believe to be revolutionary movers and shakers in our society today. I will qualify this list by saying that spirituality, as I see it, is not limited to praying, yoga or meditation practice, but is actually a higher way of relating to ourselves and to the world around us … it is a more wholesome, positive and vibrant relationship to life itself.  And in that sense, the spirituality I am pointing towards encompasses all of life.  In fact more and more, I am having trouble separating spirituality from living every moment with as much consciousness, passion and commitment to being here for the biggest and most important reasons that I can imagine.

Fitness Buzz: Want To Workout For FREE This Weekend?

vitaljuice

Now through Saturday, Vital Juice (the Daily Candy for us fitness and health buffs) is hosting a Pop-Up Wellness Retreat in what used to be the Virgin Megastore in Union Square.

The event is providing some free, entertaining fitness classes including Movieography: The 90s, a dance class inspired by some famous 90s dance flicks, and Hula Hoop Pilates. (I’m not exactly sure how that one works, but it sounds fun to me!)  You can click here to view the schedule.

If you’re not planning on taking one of the classes, you should at least stop by like I did to score some free wellness shwag, including samples of Attune pro biotic granola bars and BluePrintCleanse juice.  There’s also free mini massages and tons of coupons for spas and other health products from throughout the city.  Go and do something nice for yourself this weekend!

Brooklyn Sting: Williamsburg Walks

There are still three Saturdays left for Williamsburg Walks!  I went the first Saturday after the Renegade Art Fair and had a great time, of course that being said, the weather was beautiful.  In case this weekend is nice, check it out.  You can hang out on Bedford Avenue, lounge on patio furniture in the middle of the streets, and overall just enjoy the area.

2751374368_19fe7e4e80Presented by L Magazine and Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG)  the 2009 Williamsburg Walks is to celebrate the community on a pedestrian Bedford Avenue.   Williamsburg’s lively main drag will be closed to cars between North 4th and North 9th Streets every Saturday from June 6th to July 11th from noon to sunset.

Area non-profits and businesses will be organizing events and activities – acoustic music, urban gardening, children’s classes, performances, and many more.

Check out the site for more info.
