Dish Buzz: Awash

Awash, East Village

Awash, East Village

I’d only had Ethiopian food once in DC, but I instantaneously loved two things about it: the spicy nature of the foods, and the fact that eating with ones hands was not only allowed … but mandatory. Some friends and I opted to try Awash, a restaurant with one location downtown in the East Village (where we went) and one further uptown, close to Columbia University.

Fitness Buzz: Booty Camp

lacey

“Let’s go Team Two!! Let’s go Team Two!”  The steady chants come at my group as we complete yet another lap around the perimeter of the field.   “Woooooo! Let’s go Team One!” we yell back at them in unison and kept the momentum going.  (We are Team Two and they are Team One…we’re cheering for each other.)

I am so focused on keeping up with my team it’s now a foggy memory that only an hour beforehand, when just a glimpse of sunlight was coming in through my blinds, my alarm clock was flashing 5:30 AM and I was toying with potential excuses for why I didn’t make it.

Theatre Buzz: Tommy – See Me

Tommy ... Can You Hear Me?

Tommy ... Can You Hear Me?

I don’t think I took a breath for a full five minutes as I watched the first scene of The Gallery Player’s production of The Who’s Tommy (original book, music and lyrics by Pete Townshend). I’m not kidding, I literally sat there, stunned … amazed really, at what I was seeing, hearing … feeling. Between the orchestra booming out the amazing score, the lighting (designed by Chris Walsh) which convincingly transformed  Michael Kramer’s set into a hatch through which men parachuted down to uncertainty, and the wonderful projection screens that held images of war, destruction, and carnage … well it was all I could do to blink. No doubt about it, Tommy starts with the velocity of a pinball released from the chute … and is the definition of breathtaking.

Thankfully, after an opening that large, the musical soon gently lands you back down in your seat where you’re able to breathe again, and take in the surroundings. For those who don’t know the story, it’s easy enough for me to quote one of Tommy’s most famous songs … That deaf, dumb, blind kid sure plays a mean pinball. But of course … there’s more.

A Tripod Quest: Ad Hoc Art in Brooklyn

ad hoc on bogart

ad hoc on bogart

Perhaps a pleasant afternoon stroll through Central Park and a quick visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art no longer appeals to you as it would your average out-of-towner seeing the city. I can’t blame you. Paying as you please at the Met is always a sweet perk but I can certainly go without the crowds. And on some days, I just need to be somewhere a bit less…’fine arty’?  Somewhere showing art that makes me sincerely wonder, “What the heck is going on with that piece?” or disturb me enough to make my face twitch like I smelled something funky.

Friday Night In: Son of Rambow

son-of-rambow-poster

It is a rare gem of a film that can get you laughing out loud to the point where your sides ache.  That is exactly what Garth Jennings’ film, Son of Rambow, accomplishes.

First off, just take a look at the premise we are working with: two kids decide to make their own version of Rambo based off their subsequent obsession with the character after sneaking a peak of First Blood.

In a word: brilliant.

The hijinks that ensue as these two unlikely kids shoot their film are non-stop and  resemble that of a Tom-and-Huck storyline. Whimsical and witty cartoon moments spill off the screen and help bring you into the fantastical mind-set that is our heroes’ world.

Queens Bee: Biculturally Curious? Check Out The Thalia Spanish Theatre

thalia_spanish_theatreIf you find yourself tired of the usual “dinner and a movie” and you just don’t have the extra cash lying about to either hang out in Manhattan (Kidding. That is so pre-recession.) or hire a double-jointed hooker (Also kidding. This course of action is ill-advised.), then consider checking out Thalia Spanish Theatre in Sunnyside. Yeah, they do it with a British spelling. Yes, that also annoys me for no real reason. Try and give them a chance anyway.

Thalia Spanish Theatre, 41-17 Greenpoint Avenue, Sunnyside, NY, 11104

NY Media Swarm: Craigslist No Longer Encouraging Prostitution

red-roses-photo1

There once was a time when I viewed Craigslist as a safe community  where I could look for roommates, find a job, and even join a band.  However, lately it has become as dangerous as those infamous chat rooms from the early 90’s. I knew the day would come when Craigslist would have to be regulated.

Dish Buzz: Ilili

Ilili, Flatiron

ilili, Flatiron

A friend recently dined at ilili and had highly recommended it, especially their prix fixe options ($25 at lunch and $35 at dinner) which includes your choice of two starters, an entree and a dessert.  There is an additional charge for one of the lamb courses and also for one of  the duck courses. I was curious to check it out to see the difference between Lebanese, Greek  and Turkish cuisine.  A little research revealed that Lebanese dishes use a lot of garlic and olive oil with the occasional lemon juice. Poultry is the main meat dish and if red meat is used, it is usually lamb. Read more »
