NY Media Swarm: Drinking the media blues…

It has been officially confirmed while we in the media always knew it to be true– the media industry is the heaviest drinking class of professionals according to the UK’s Guardian.

Apparently, media workers consume the equivalent of more than four bottles of wine/19pints of beer a week, double what is the recommended limit. They overshadow the next heaviest drinking professionals– IT workers.

It was reported that over a third of media workers feel pressured to drink by their colleagues.  Now, let’s be honest. Is it really peer pressure or the “it’s free” pressure.  Sure, you get all these copious invitations to drink with different publications and websites and sometimes your co-workers pressure you to attend the events. But nobody really pressures you to drink. You drink because you happen to be at a party where the booze is flowing and you don’t have to pay a dime.  Sometimes you drink because working in the media can suck and you just want to drink your blues away, for free.

I can personally attest to the liquid lunches, lavish media parties with endless open bars, or even better, huge events where every corner is a bar maid with a tray of drinks at your disposal.   Granted, I do choose not to attend many functions because sometimes I would rather be at home watching TV with a glass of wine rather than schmoozing with industry folks.  Nonetheless, everyone knows that when you get into media, alcohol is one of the perks and you might as well take advantage of it while you still have a job.

So to those in the media, cheers!
