Sometimes the funnies just seem to happen to the unsuspecting soul, and this week humor writers Benjamin Nugent and Simon Rich publicly shared the tickling pains of their existence at DUMBO’s powerHouse Books. Read more »
A while ago I signed up for a few kids and family related newsletters from Time Out New York to Parents to Parenting. (Side note: It’s really hard to explain to a non-parent that Parents and Parenting are not the same magazine.) I was hoping to find some inspiration on fun family activities, but I just didn’t see anything I didn’t already know. Sure, we all know we can go to a children’s reading hour, but what if we want something different for a change?
I also signed up to receive special offers from Telecharge which I thought was a little suspect until they mentioned a recession special on Broadway musicals and plays.
Called Kids Night on Broadway, the new program allows those between the ages of 6 and 18 to go for free as long as they are with an adult—you!
The catch? Only certain musicals and plays are participating. However, 22 favorites are, including In the Heights, Shrek, and Mamma Mia. And certain restaurants in the area (if you can handle—or want to handle dining in Times Square) are offering a free entree to kids as they as they are with an adult—that would be you again.
Iadanza’s website describes him as “a storyteller and a sophisticated folkie with a strikingly unusual tenor voice, a foot-stomping Euro-jazz schooled band, and a growing repertoire of smart, witty, warm, and stick-in-your-ear hummable songs.” If you enjoyed his vocal stylings, why not check him out live?
Iadanza’s upcoming tour schedule in the tri-state area:
Fri 3/20/09 Joe Iadanza in New York, NY 10009 Banjo Jim’s
Thu 4/2/09 Joe Iadanza in Brooklyn, NY 11222 Matchless
Thu 4/23/09 Joe Iadanza in Hoboken, NJ 07030 GoldHawk
You can also check out more of his live music videos on his Joe Songwriter YouTube channel.
When I first moved to the city, Max Brenner was one of the first restaurants I tried. I’ll admit I was drawn by two things – one being the prominence of chocolate on their menu and two being their slogan, “Chocolate by the bald man.” Who was this bald man and does he really know his chocolate? I still don’t know who the bald man is but I think the answer to that second part is a definite yes.
There’s been a lot of talk lately about Rihanna and Chris Brown in the headlines, the tabloids, the blogs, the daytime talk shows, the elevator banks … how he allegedly beat her and how they’ve allegedly reconciled. Wherever you go you’ll hear the same thing: What the hell is she thinking? I can’t even begin to speculate on what happened, or what she’s thinking. What I can say is … if it’s anything like what I think it is, it’s nothing new. And it’s been fodder for plays like Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love for years.
Some couples find something when they meet that has nothing to do with love but everything to do with passion, so they think it’s grounds for a relationship and they go for it. But passion comes in many varieties and the variety that comes with bruises and abuse is not love. Still, there must be something addicting about it for both people involved or they wouldn’t keep going back. People who do, Sam Shepard would have us believe, are Fools. I would have to agree with him there.
The night of the Missed Connection, after getting on the train, I was immediately drawn to the gentleman and as my companion for the night left the subway to head home, I decided to not sit anywhere else, but right beside him. In my mind I was planning this to actually happen and strangely enough it worked out to my advantage- screenwriters couldn’t have penned a better turnout. Now, to protect the innocent (him) and the not-so-innocent (me) I am going to change up a few minor details. McCutie (as we will now call him) and myself share several friends but we have never officially met. I’ve seen him from afar at parties and other social events we attend which is how I was able to recognize him when I first entered the train. I knew it was only a matter of moments before he worked up enough courage to talk to me! Score, when this happened he was pretty much under my spell it seemed. Read more »
I can not express to you how good it feels to actually take time out to write this. I’ve been recently slaving away in the studio working on my new EP (which is long overdue). Most of my days consist of writing and revising lyrics and most of my nights skip sleep in order to get proper vocals recorded. Despite the soar throat and sleep ridden eyes, I’m feeling good about the project. Unfortunately being that I spent most of my time working, I haven’t had time to play. Therefore I haven’t been to any concerts the past weekend, but do have a list of concerts you should check out this weekend!
If you’re working or if you’re not, you’re probably looking for ways to save money. And if you’re like me, with food as your biggest expense after rent, that can take some extra work. While I was freelancing I had plenty of time to cook, shop, and plan. My work could get done any time, day or night.
But now that I’ve returned to the ranks of the midtown brigade, it’s not so easy to both eat well and save money. It requires forethought. It demands tupperware. And it helps to have a significant other (or even roommate) who’s willing to cook when you can’t. You can freeze leftovers for weeks or even months later (depending on the item in question), or cover it up and take it to work the next day. You’ll be eating far better than your fellow corporate drones, and saving money too. In fact, going over my finances, I’ve cut my total food expenditure by about $300 a month, just by cooking at home more and not being suckered in to that $10 soda and sandwich at overpriced purveyors of mystery meat slathered in chipotle mayo.
But like I said, it’s tough when you’re pulling late nights like I have. That’s when it helps to have backup. Mine is my significant other. Here’s how it went for the beta-chef in the relationship.
