Gay Life – The Paulinator: More than Boys…
Flashback to the days when I was in the closet, life was focused on one thing, my career. I thought if I could keep this my number one priority in life, then I would not have to think about the other scary realities. So when I was asked about relationships or if I was dating anyone, it was easy to brush it off and say, “I’m really trying to focus on my career right now.” Now it seems all I focus on are boys, which is not such a horrible thing but can’t I focus on both a career and finding someone to “If you seek Amy?“
I must admit my brief pause from Hot Bartender has been going well. I mean, as well as it can be for a week… Though not only have I taken a pause from him, but I am taking a pause from the bar scene all together. I lost myself a bit when I was focusing solely on boys and wanted to take a step back to gain some perspective. This perspective came Saturday night in the form of the GLAAD Media Awards diner at the Times Square Marriott Marquis! For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are (according to their Web site):
The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender community and the issues that effect their lives.
That’s when it dawned on me what a unique opportunity I have been given. I have this fantastic outlet to share my life with you and for the past few weeks all I can write about are the latest hook ups in my life. Honestly, hook ups are for the most part (when done right) a fantastic part of life, but they only make up a portion of my life. The rest of the time I’m consumed with work, friends, family and general day-to-day living. Though I must admit, I am not in any sort of position to start a revolution, Harvey Milk-style, but I will do my best to inform you of movements you should know about. For example: Postcards to the President. This is a grassroots campaign where postcards from all over the country are being sent to President Obama urging for the repeal of D.O.M.A. – the Defense of Marriage Act.
The GLAAD Media Awards opened my eyes a bit to the way I could begin to shape this weekly column. Of course I will continue to keep you a breast of McCutie and my Latin Lover, but I’m going to start peppering in a bit more topical posts that could very well lead to a nomination in the form of: Outstanding Digital Journalism Article. I mean, if Kathy Griffin can come drop a CD (titled: For Your Consideration) for the the sole purpose of a GRAMMY nomination, then why can’t I, The Paulinator, go after a GLAAD Media Award?! In order to start on this path toward a nomination I want to bring my own life’s mission statement to this column each week: to entertain, to educate and to inspire… and I hope I have done that thus far, but now I will strive to go deeper going forward.
