It’s tough times. It’s in times like these that non-profits and charities are suffering severely, too. Why not use this time of introspection to dig deep and either volunteer or give what you can.
Figure Skating In Harlem is an organization that educates and trains young girls in ice skating instruction, empowering them with the confidence and foundation to achieve their dreams. They have an upcoming charity event, it’s a bit on the Ouch scale, but if you’d like to scratch that inner ice skating fan itch, start saving! The annual benefit will be held on Monday evening, April 6, 2009, from 6pm-9pm at Wollman Rink in Central Park.
Do friends with benefits ever become something more? Or once you are in the casual sex category are you stuck there forever?
Signed,
Casual Encounterer in Canarsie
Ah, casual sex. The spring training of intercourse. The Promised Land for atheists and the non-practicing alike. The lifeblood of HBO’s “Dream On.” Just as with Barack Obama’s presidency, the successful nurturing of a casual sex relationship can feel like the achievement of an impossible dream. And just like a Secret Service agent, it’s in your best interest to protect the fragile nature of this relationship with your life. One wrong move and things can quickly go from smiles and handshakes to extreme complication. With all the subtlety of Presidential brain matter dashed about the backseat of a convertible, suddenly you are a couple.
No one loves Neil Gaiman’s dark little fairy tale Coraline more than I do. The ageless Miss Jones, with her classic kiddy curiosity and British sass, gives Lewis Carroll’s Alice a run for her money. Plus there is something romantic and enduring about Gaiman’s 10-year saga to write her story; he began writing Coraline years before beginning his acclaimed Neverwhere, published in 1996, as he says, writing quietly and observing.
Of course, Henry Selick’s film adaptation had problems for me; Coraline is NOT from Michigan, for one! Still, there’s a lot to be said for bringing children’s books to the big screen: the stories and characters on the page really do leap to life in a new way. Seeing the film last week made me want to read the novel for, yet, a 17th time. But alas, this isn’t a film column. So, here’s my tie-in, another children’s book I’d like to see adapted for film: Julius Lester’s Guardian.
I was afraid of The Wendigo before I even got into the theatre. But not for the reasons you might think. Not because I was about to see a tale of horror, or because I’d done some research on it and the Algernon Blackwood story (upon which it was based) left me spooked. Not because I was coming off a cold and had that terrible oh-damn-what-if-I-start-coughing-during-a-suspenseful-part dread (was some actor going to break character and chew my butt out Christian Bale style ?)No – I was afraid that my delightful chat with playwright Eric Sanders a few weeks ago would some how predispose me to liking this play and not judging it critically.Well, I didn’t have to worry because that didn’t happen.
Baking is not something I claim to do well, or hardly even at all. But there’s something about February 14th that compels me to make an attempt. Maybe it’s because the holiday is the vanguard of the chocolate and floral industries (everyone knows Easter is for the food-coloring lobby), but for me Valentine’s Day desserts mean chocolate. And baking with chocolate when you are lacking in dessert skills means brownies.
With Valentine’s day right around the corner love is obviously on the brain and your friendly neighborhood gay bee is no different. Once again, I will be without a true Valentine even though I started off the year with three potential suitors. Obviously life happens the way it is suppose to and when one door is closed, another opens… I guess that’s what they say. Last week something pretty spectacular happened. Something I’ve attempted to explain to my sisters and they simply did not understand how big a deal this truly is… but I will now tell you and you will see this is kinda a big deal!
The reviews for West Village newcomer Cabrito have been all over the map. Love ‘em. Hate ‘em. I’d had them on my list for a long time and finally checked them out last Wednesday.
My friend and I arrived at 6pm, which ended up being good as we did not have reservations and the empty restaurant upon our arrival filled up easily by 6:30-6:45. It was pretty standard size, with tables easily pushed together to make a larger table or split to form a row of two tops. Read more »
With Valentine’s Day approaching, everyone is wondering where they should take their significant other (or potential significant other). If you were to ask me where’s the ideal place to take them, I’d have to say a show!
Music performances are truly one of a kind and are a lot cooler than the typical dinner/movie date. Luckily for you (and I) there are a lot of shows worth taking that special someone to this weekend.
