New York City Restaurants – Dish Buzz: Cabrito

Cabrito, West Village

Cabrito, West Village

The reviews for West Village newcomer Cabrito have been all over the map. Love ‘em. Hate ‘em. I’d had them on my list for a long time and finally checked them out last Wednesday.

My friend and I arrived at 6pm, which ended up being good as we did not have reservations and the empty restaurant upon our arrival filled up easily by 6:30-6:45. It was pretty standard size, with tables easily pushed together to make a larger table or split to form a row of two tops.

We opted for an order of the Rajas Con Crema to start and try something different from our usual guacamole. Our server concurred that it was one of his personal favorites. The dish consisted of roasted poblano peppers (and oh my were they spicy) in a cream sauce served with fresh tortillas. It was amazing. I would definitely recommend getting a refill of water once the dish arrives. You will need it, as sangria doesn’t quite put out the fire like agua.

For my main course, I opted for the Pollo Barbacoa, a half chicken roasted and rubbed with chili atop a bed of fried plantain coconut rice with mezcal raisin. The chili seasoning added spice to the dish which was counterbalanced by the sweetness of the plaintain coconut rice and the raisins. They definitely don’t skimp on serving size. There was plenty leftover for Cabrito, Round 2 the next day. My friend tried one of their huaraches, a type of dish which they specialize in. It’s an oval shaped, thick masa shell topped off with your meat of choice (she had the Al Carbon, their skirt steak), topped by a thin layer of beans and crowned with a sprinkling of lettuce. She said it was amazing and again, plenty of food for sure.

We were surprised when midway through our main course, they brought out a complimentary side from the kitchen. It was their roasted brussels sprouts, roasted with small chunks of flavorful chorizo. Never a big fan of brussels sprouts, I would like to take back anything bad I’ve ever said about brussels sprouts. I stand corrected but now state they are only palatable when paired with chorizo. Amazing. So good, but definitely plenty for sharing. We didn’t have room for dessert, so I will have to assess their churros on another day. If you are over in the West Village, this is definitely one you should give a try.
