Gay Life – The Paulinator: Sing Me A Song

There is a saying most women say, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Well, I think most gays would agree that the way to a gay man’s heart is through a song.
I sadly was not blessed with the gay gift of song. My singing voice is not up to par with most of my gay counterparts, so I like to live vicariously through those that can actually carry a tune. I think the best place to go and just hear some amazing singing is down in the West Village at the piano bars that date back to the days of the Stonewall Riots.
I personally like to visit The Duplex for a couple of reasons, but before I tell you those, I thought I should highlight a few other notable bars to visit. My first experience at Rose’s Turn was quite interesting to say the least. I was brand spankin’ new to the city and had auditioned for this one-act musical comedy about a drag queen (who shall remain nameless) and his life growing up. I was cast as the man when he was in his teens and I must say I found it completely odd during my audition that I was never asked to sing a note. I went out to dinner with the producer and the lead actor whom the show was about and they were incredibly sweet to me. They bought me a bunch of groceries for the dorm and totally took care of me. After the first rehearsal we simply ran through the script, still no singing. Well, I was brought to Rose’s Turn to see the actor sing and introduce me to the world of piano bars.
Young and naive is what I was because after a week worth of rehearsals and still no singing for this musical, I got the ax and looking back I’m pretty sure it is because I didn’t sleep with either of the men. Having seen the final performance of the show I was going to make my NYC debut in, I’m thrilled to have not have been associated with such crap!
I’ve only stumbled into Marie’s Crisis on occasion and what I remember fondly is how everyone truly gets involved! When someone goes to sing everyone sings along. It’s exactly what Marie’s Crisis is… one big gay sing along! Who doesn’t love that?! It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re looking to belt a show tune or two with friends.
Well, now I must inform you that my favorite spot currently is The Duplex and my number one reason is a man who can sing his way right into my heart, if he wanted. Lady and Gentlemen, Mr. Brian Nash! He not only is ridonkulously easy on the eyes, he’s witty and majorly talented. The Paulinator clearly is crushin’ big time on the man who tickles the ivories Wednesdays and Sundays in the piano bar and is also one of the hosts for Mostly Sondheim on Friday nights! When I say he’s talented, it is an understatement simply because there are no words for his musical genius. So enough about Brian… another reason to go to The Duplex is simply because everyone on staff is awesome! They remember your name, your drink and treat you like a human being. There is definitely a Cheers-like atmosphere in the air when you walk in. You can’t help but love The Duplex & Brian Nash, all at the same time!
