All Things New York – Concierge Corner: New Year Notions, with Marissa.
You made it! As we embark into this unknown, non-Bush territory, we realize there is a ton of stuff 2009 offers us. And of course, NYC doesn’t let us down either. Check out the haps this week and please give me some feedback on what you want for ’09 so I can deliver the goods to you each week, fresh and ready to be gotten.
The Week(end) Ahead:
Cool Culture: What can be more exhilarating than starting the New Year off on the right, or left, foot!? Take a 19-mile journey through Southeast Brooklyn and check out the scenes in Canarsie, Georgetown, Bergen Beach, Mill Basin, Flatlands and Midwood. Meet the rest of the Pedestrian peeps at the corner of East 105th St and Farragut Rd, Brooklyn. Email Matt here, or check out the site. 10 am this Saturday, January 3rd, 2009.
Bee Here: In honor of your creative spirit, take a walk on the wild-side and check out the Church of Craft. Etsy Labs have all of the tools, supplies and needs of any DIY’er. Tables and couches are abundant as you chill out and make things on this frosty Sunday (January 4th) afternoon from 2 – 6 pm. This meeting is open to anyone and you should feel free to bring your craft or any project you are working on or a potluck dish. This is literally a meeting of the creative minds. Marseille is located at 630 9th Ave & 44th Street. Call 212.333.2323 for reservations or if you have any questions. Register now, and get it for $150, half price!
Raising the ‘Bar’: The new kid on the block goes by the name Chloe, Chloe 81 that is. Beatrice Inn may just be a name of yesteryear with this new LES hotspot. Beyond an unmarked door, and down an unassuming set of concrete stairs – this bar which resembles a catacomb brimming with youth, beauty and shine. Splashes of red offset the all white-tile walls with sconces to ensure not only is it light enough to see who you are talking to, but it’s almost too bright. Check them out at 81 Ludlow Street (unmarked door). Open Monday – Saturday from 7 pm – 2 am. Food is served until 11 pm. Call for more info if needed, or if you can’t find the door. Seriously – 212.677.0067.
Ya ‘Heard’ it Here: Afrika Bambaataa. You know him….Check out Planet Rock here. Then come back to get the event details. Ok, you’re back? Fresh beat right…so catch him this Saturday January 3rd at 11 pm. A little backstory: He is the turntablist who basically helped bring the Hip-Hop and Electro-Funk scene to the 70s. The 80s also brought much success for Afrika and now he is back, decades later with his songs “Metal” and PB More Shake” still getting play in the club scene.$12-15 at (le) Passion Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street. Call for info 212.796.0741.
Until next week, Marissa signing off…
