I could load this section up with more to-dos for the next two weeks, but I am not going to do that. Instead – I think it’s time we have a talk. I know the city is fun for parties, networking and recreational food and drink. But sometimes you have to take a step back and take a deep breath.
So in this edition, we will be covering Pranayama. This is the part of Yoga that is strictly concerned with breathing. Pranayama is a Sanskrit word meaning “The practice (yama) of Breath (prana) or Life Force”. Breathing is the indicator that we are alive. If it is done wrongly, you may be at risk of harm. This is why it’s important to be learned in the art, before embarking. Instead of being fearful, be motivated to learn, breathe and feel differently than you have ever felt before. Below is an alternative technique of something called “Alternate Nostril Breath”. Keep in mind, that pranayama does not replace yoga nor is it the other way around either.

Whether you are getting your Star of David on this holiday, or your Santa outfit (or both, like me) – there is much to celebrate in the NYC scene. Even though the economy is tight, your pockets near empty, and bonuses are put on hold this year – find at least one person in need and be charitable. It can be anything from a cup of hot cocoa to a dollar. Maybe even a pair or shoes or jacket you no longer need. It will just make your holiday that much more special. Onto the fun stuff, we will be reviewing the best places in the city to chill this next week or so. Keep an eye out for next week’s NEW YEAR EDITION. And put on some Nat King Cole, dammit.

I was lucky enough to snag some deeply discounted tickets to the limited engagement of The Cripple of Inishmaan (by Martin McDonaugh and directed by Garry Hynes) last week. Let’s face it, when someone offers you discount tickets that cost less than a movie ticket, as long as the plot is a shade better than Death Race you’re already ahead of the game. So excited was I by the chance to see live theatre for ten dollars, that I barely glanced at the synopsis which informed me that The Cripple of Inishmaan was set in 1934, on an island off the west coast of Ireland, and that it involved events surrounding the time filmmaker Robert Flaherty came to the area to film his movie Man of Aran. I mean, I’m not really one for blurbs. Anything loses its zing when boiled down to a few sentences. I’m more of a jump-in-with-both-feet-and-then-decided-if-I-like-it type of gal, ’specially when, as I’ve mentioned before, the tickets are ten bucks.

Welcome to my first Hive Cooking post on Neighborbee. What’s my deal? Well, I’m not a pro, I’m not officially trained even. I just love food- cooking it, eating it, learning about it. And I’m cheap too, and lazy. Definitely lazy. I’m more apt to cook food that’s easy and flavorful, and not too expensive. Culinary voyeurism of this kind is not what you’ll read about here.

Q: My girlfriend insists that we go to visit her parents in Arizona for Christmas. I don’t want to go because I think it needs to be cold to be Christmas. I would much rather get her to stay here and spend the day with my family in New Jersey. How do I do that?
Signed,
Secaucus Santa
A: My first piece of advice is never move to Australia. My second piece of advice is go to Arizona. And my third piece of advice is Christmas is not that special.

I don’t think every gay has the same dream, but at some point the idea of getting a sugar daddy has crossed their minds. Every now and then I catch an episode of The Girls Next Door on E! and I think how ridiculously lucky they are to live in that mansion and have everything pretty much taken care off by Heff. Now, who knows what happens in that bedroom behind closed doors, but I am pretty certain we can take a good guess. Recently I was hanging out at bar for an after work networking function. I was chatting with this guy who works in the same industry I do, so we were comparing notes and best practices. During our conversation another colleague, from a sister organization came over. We shall call him SugarDaddy. SugarDaddy is an older English gentleman who I have met before, but only under professional circumstances. Our first meeting was during the conference in Denver, which I wrote about previously, and no he was not my late night suitor that evening!

Amber - Upper West Side
While I really enjoy sushi, I had yet to find my “go to” spots in the city for good fresh sushi. It seems to be something that most of my friends don’t suggest and I just hadn’t gotten around to trying. So, when a friend wanted to try a sushi restaurant on the Upper West Side, I was all for trying out his recommendation.
Amber is a nice sized restaurant, with a fair amount of seating at the bar, a main dining area, and also a dining area in a separate room closest to the windows facing out towards 70th Street. As has been my experience in most nice Japanese restaurants, the decor was simple, crisp, very organized and methodical. Read more »

On the border of Harlem and Morningside Heights, next to the unending Fredrick Douglas circle redesign at 110th Street, you’ll find a unique neighborhood café that’s already gone through a name change in its five short years. I’d only visited its earlier incarnation as Saurin Parke, and so when I returned recently under the Café Amrita moniker I was afraid that what made the old place so great would be gone.

The only thing better than a New York based band is a band consisting of members from other New York based bands. My Happy Gun represents the fusion of sounds and stylistic components from various subgenres of rock music.
