All Things New York – Concierge Corner: New Years Eve!

If you are like me, your plans for New Year’s Eve are still undone. About as undone as you will be by the end of the night on the 31st. So, let us venture into some of the lesser-known options around NYC and the boroughs. These will not break the bank, as most of them are under $50. And let’s be realistic…$50 is less than what it will cost for you to go to some hole-in-the-wall bar near your pad including takeout from your local pizzeria. So cough up the dollars folks. And, being that you will be hungry the next day, I have included some options for brunch on New Years Day.

Keep to those resolutions, especially the one about coming here weekly.

  • The Rub @ Southpaw: Check out Cosmo Baker, Ayres & Eleven, and hear their special guests, Certified Bananas. Tickets are $40 which includes some grub and a champagne toast at midnight. Doors open at 9:00 PM…it is their regular crowd (read: busy) but exemplified because it’s NYE.
  • Kenny Loft’n NYE Loft Party: Kenny Loft’n is back for his 5th Annual New Years party and a highly recommended jam for all. He teams up with End of the Weak and Bambu Papers for another crazy west side loft party with music from DJ Treats, Melo X, and DJ Fish spinning classics, soul, and hip-hop. There’s an open bar from 10:00 – 2:00 with beer, vodka, crunk juice and a champagne toast but this one takes the prize cause it’s BYOB…furthermore, they’ll also provide free cups, ice, and mixers in case you can only fit a few handles in your North Face. The tickets are $40.  Buy tickets in advance by emailing lof...@gmail.com, instead of paying $50 at the door.
  • Roots New Year’s Eve @ Cielo: Louie Vega (yes, Louie Louie) will be back in NYC for NYE for the first time in more than a decade when he DJs at Cielo. Kevin Hedge joins Vega to share spinning duties. Limited $50 tickets are still available.
  • Prince Paul @ The Delancey: If you are a frequent trooper of the NYC party scene, you will know Prince Paul by name. If not, this gives you a great excuse to check his party out. The Prince hosts his annual NYE party at The Delancey. Good music guaranteed and a cheap ticket at $25. Buy drinks at the bar and enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a champagne toast at midnight.
  • NYE Late Night Blowout @ Le Poisson Rouge: Pregame at your place with Dick Clark, then head over after the ball drops for after hours at LPR. Matthew Dear, Drop the Lime, Michna, & Mike Servito are all on the bill with a late-night party starting at 2:00 AM going til 8:00 AM. Don’t worry, they’ll be serving free breakfast. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.
  • The Blowout @ Studio B: No, they are not shut down. Grandmaster Mele Mel of The Furious Five will be performing ‘White Lines’ and ‘The Message,’ along with Mickey Factz and Ninja Sonik. The bill also features a long list of DJs: U.K.’s Sinden, Fool’s Gold’s Jokers of the Scene, Scott Henry, Reid Speed, Trouble & Bass, and Cowboy Mark. Tickets are $20 and unlike most of these parties, it’s 19+ so those 21 and under have a solid option here.
  • GBH’s NYE Parties @ Various Clubs: GBH will be throwing a few different parties at their regular spots throughout Manhattan. Even though I can’t confirm who is DJ’ing these, you know they won’t let you down. Tickets for their parties at The Cabanas at The Maritime Hotel or Aspen Social Club at Stay Hotel are $30 and Caffe Bar and The Darkroom are even less at $25. Tickets for all of GBH’s NYE events available here.

If you are more of a “I want to be seen in the scene” type of concierge client (think Marquee, Cipriani, etc), then I urge you to visit here. Having worked in Nightlife for years, I could not in my best conscience list these spots. You are on your own there, kiddies.

THE NEXT DAY – January 1st, 2009…dum dum dummmmm.

Hungry?

If you aren’t fully ashamed of yourself by 12pm (the time you wake up to the sound of your friends texting you), then you should try to make it out for some grub. All of that liquor on an empty stomach will just cause your head to spin more than the dance floor was spinning last night.

  • Park Avenue Winter: 100 E. 63rd St., at Park Ave.; 212-644-1900. Noon – 4 pm. It’s only $35 for a prix fixe menu. Oh, that isn’t enough to get you in, eh? Well, it begins with plenty of Champagne, absorbing starch from pastries and breads for the table and appetizers like porcini ravioli. And then the entrée choice includes a toad in the hole with hen-of-the-woods mushrooms, breakfast risotto and more. MENU HERE.

  • Norma’s: 118 W. 57th St., nr. Sixth Ave.; 212-708-7460. 7 am – 3 pm. Hands down, one of the best breakfast/brunch spots in the city. The gym will be calling you tomorrow, so make sure you get on your French Toast game decked out with strawberries, pistachios, and Valrhona-chocolate drizzle, or go for the gold, with the Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata flecked with caviar. MENU HERE.

  • 202 (View Menu) 75 Ninth Ave., nr. 15th St.; 646-638-1173. 11 am – 4 pm. A designer eatery, this dark and organic space calls you to their full English Breakfast offerings! Head over blokes and birds, you won’t be sorry. MENU HERE.

  • Morandi: 211 Waverly Pl., at Charles St.; 212-627-7575 .10 am – 3 pm. The famed Keith McNally has created this Italian spot to serve you any dream you can imagine from an early pizza to a baked egg omelet. Treats and mimosa glasses are there to taunt your sugary desires. MENU HERE.

  • Good: 89 Greenwich Ave., at Bank St.; 212-691-8080. 11 am – 4 pm. It has to be good – it’s one of the famed West Village brunch spots. They make their own biscuits for crying out loud. Head on over for a non-traditional traditional BLT with aged Cheddar, or for any of their other goodies. Various prices. MENU HERE.

  • The Odeon: 145 W. Broadway, at Thomas St.; 212-233-0507. 10 am – 4 pm. Yes, it’s a diner, but of the Art Deco-era. At a joint like this, there is no set menu or price. Just head on in if you don’t know where else to go! MENU HERE.

  • 88 Palace: 88 E. Broadway, nr. Forsythe St.; 212-941-8886. 9 am – 4 pm. If the Times Square ball left you wanting more, trek downtown for lots of little balls—the squishy-steamed, fried, and meaty kind of dim sum, that is. MENU HERE.

  • Walter Foods: 253 Grand St., nr. Driggs Ave., Williamsburg; 718-387-8783. 11 am – 4:30 pm. With a well-known chef, this newish spot from Balthazar bartender Danny Minch and Barrio Chino owner Dylan Dodd is a no-miss. Having just released their brunch menu, why not gain the bragging rights of being the only one in your circle to check it out. If you want something lighter than house-made waffles there’s a full raw bar. MENU HERE.

  • Cup: 35-01 36th St., Astoria; 718-937-2322. 8 am – 11 pm. Those in a hurry to get started early will appreciate this triple threat: round-the-clock hours, big portions, and all-American comfort. MENU HERE.

See you this Friday gang. It shall be a resolutionary year!
