A Tripod Quest: Walking Willie-style

Hey folks, my name is Miguel de la Fuente, current Bushwick resident, and future vagabonding photojournalist (hopefully). But really, I’m excited for an opportunity to blog about my neighborhood, Brooklyn, and filter it with my own personal photographic lens. Expect some future entries on all things photo, art, Brooklyn, or some wildly imaginative combination of the three. Peace!

On Sunday, the plan was this: participate in a photo-scavenger hunt with a group of photo-junkies like myself in order to scope out the scenic in Brooklyn, upload my pictures along with an assortment of the days’ best captures, and run home to write all about it.

Gay Life – The Paulinator: It’s About Love, Stupid

As much as I talk about random hook ups and having sex frequently with ‘first name only’ guys, deep down I like to consider myself a hopeless romantic. I was not always on the quest for Mister Right. As you may remember I only recently came out to myself and my friends. While Mr. Right Now has always played a part in my life I was truly hoping to find a cute Miss Right. A woman I could settle down with, marry and start a family! I had this idea of the perfect family and truly believed that in order to find happiness I needed to follow this specific path.

Theatre Buzz: Angel Eaters Trilogy – A Three Course Meal

My husband’s home town in Michigan is so small that, to them, the word “theatre” is 1) spelled “theater” and 2) always preceded by the word “movie”. And if you want to get to that “movie theater” you’ll need a car — because the closest one is 13 miles away in the next town over. Growing up, if he wanted a theatre experience of ANY kind he needed to head to Chicago.

Meanwhile, New York is so rife with theatre space that you can’t go to a Starbuck’s without being within a stone’s throw of one. Heck … there’s one in the building where I work. There was even a theatre connected to the restaurant I had dinner in last night. If you climb on any mailbox and squint, you can see independent theatre going on everywhere in New York.

I’m particularly fond of theatre companies who put on well crafted plays written by up and coming writers. Johnna Adam’s Angel Eater’s Trilogy is just such a work, and FLUX Theatre Ensemble is just such a company.

New York City Profile – Beeline Interview: Artist Ernest Concepcion

Ernest is one of my favourite artists and I’m so happy he took time out of his busy Fall schedule to chat. His drawings/paintings always make me feel like I’m in the head of a little boy imagining war and anime, love and friendship – which is a good thing. That child-like quality plus the engrossing detail in his work creates a cinematic feeling. Each time I look at one of Ernest’s pieces, I see something new and am engaged in a new epic adventure. Check out his show, or even better, drop by tomorrow at the opening and say hi.

Name: Ernest Concepcion
Occupation: Artist/Museum Educator
Borough/Neighborhood:  Home: Brooklyn/Kensington, Art Studio: Gowanus

Book Review – Fighting the Droop: What to Do?

Payless or Prada? That two-day-old pasta surprise or sesame-crusted salmon (yum!) at Café Foo-Foo? Or deli drip versus my double latte? Decisions, decisions…

With Black Friday 2008 looking to be pretty red, kicks and coffee are not the only downgrades being made these days. Now it seems even playtime calls for some creative budgeting. Good thing we live in (one of) the greatest cities in the world, where even your run o’ the mill Barnes and Noble can be a definite hot spot. The key word here is ‘free’ or if you really want to splurge ‘suggested donation’.

New York City Restaurants – Dish Buzz: D. O. C. Wine Bar

D. O. C. Wine Bar, Williamsburg

Having only ever pursued the likes of Bedford Avenue, I decided to venture a bit East to check out some of the area’s other offerings. Sadly, the place I wanted to hit up was closed at 9pm on a Tuesday night. I’d jotted down a plan B option and headed further East. Along the way, on North 7th, I came across a subtle place at the intersection of Wyeth and 7th. There was no sign out front, but I could see lots of people seated inside faintly visible due to a pervasive candle glow. Little did I know I’d ended up at plan B anyhow, D. O. C.

New York City Music Scene – The Sweet Beat: Chicken Soup & Catchy Tunes

As many of you know there wasn’t a new installment of “The Sweet Beat” last week. I want to apologize for that. I was battling the flu which ended up triggering my asthma, so needless to say I spent most of my time in bed.

Like a true New Yorker, I didn’t let my illness slow me down (too much). Although I was stuck at home, I was living through my speakers. I swear, no matter how bad you feel you can always count on music to make you feel better (you should also take medicine, of course). Read more »

Dating in New York City – Holding Hans with Brian Hansbury: Manscaping

Q:  P. Diddy got me thinking this week.  What percentage of men are practiced in the art of manscaping?  Is this something a girl expects me to have done?

Signed,
Bushy In Bushwick

A:  Allure Magazine quoted P. Diddy this week as saying he shaves and grooms his private areas marking the 5,826th time I’ve heard something about P. Diddy and not given a shit.  But I guess there are a lot of fellas out there like you, Bushy, who have no concept of personal hair care and might be taken aback by the concept of trimming the old pube hedge, of whacking the old dick weeds

All Things Brooklyn – Brooklyn Sting: Getting Cultured at the Brooklyn Museum of Art

It’s getting to be that time of year when we want to spend our weekends indoors, somewhere warm and dry. Since we can’t spend the entire winter in our apartments, museums in Brooklyn are a perfect antidote to cabin fever.
